Know about the Benefits of Gravity Die Casting

The Benefits of Gravity Die Casting

To fabricate metal alloys with dense, high-quality mechanical attributes, the process of gravity die casting is used. Sometimes it is called permanent mold casting or Al gravity casting. To create enough pressure on the alloy to settle into all channels within the mold other die casting processes require the use of gasses or vacuums. The gravity method provides several benefits, including faster production times, smoother surfaces, and exceptional dimensional accuracy.

Compared to other processes gravity casting tends to be more cost-effective, as injecting the metal into the molds does not require any large or complex machinery.

Gravity Die Casting: Materials & Process

With non-ferrous alloys like aluminum, zinc, and copper this method works best. It is a simple process: first, the mold undergoes heat treatment and is then with a lubricating die release agent it is coated, which after cooling allows easy removal of the cast. Then, into the cavity, the liquid metal is poured and allowed to flow into every dimension of the mold. To remove any sharp edges or extra material the cast is removed and refined after it has cooled and solidified.

Alternatives to Gravity Die Casting

Rather than gravity dies casting Aluminum die casting is often used for larger production orders. To create three-dimensional hollows and more complex molds, sand casting is used and it usually has higher tooling costs.

If a high production run is necessary investment casting is another viable alternative to gravity casting from Al gravity casting suppliers. For secondary machining, the high-pressure automated filling process reduces errors and the need but can be more expensive to set up.

You may want to consider investment casting as an alternative if your the project requires a thin-wall casting, a large production run, or requires consistency to support load-bearing applications.

Automotive Industry & Gravity Die Casting

However for simply shaped, single-part molds gravity casting works best and it can also produce more complex casts effectively. Virtually in every sector of the modern world gravity casting is widely used by Al gravity casting manufacturers, with a strong presence in the automotive industry. From cylinder heads to engine support, with gravity die casting many light-alloy automotive components are created.
